Unpublished research articles based on contributions to EngOpt 2008 can be submitted for publication in these special issues. The manuscripts must be in agreement with the objectives and scope of the corresponding journal and will have to undergo rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymous refereeing by independent expert referees.


Deadline for submission contributions for the special issues: 30th October 2008.

Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering

Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering provides an international forum for the discussion of conceptual ideas and methods for the practical solution of applied inverse problems. The journal aims to address the needs of practicing engineers and to serve as a focal point for the quick communication of ideas. Topics include:

• Shape design: determination of shape, size and location of domains (shape identification or optimization in acoustics, aerodynamics, electromagnets etc; detection of voids and cracks).
• Material properties: determination of physical properties of media.
• Boundary values/initial values: identification of the proper boundary conditions and/or initial conditions (tomographic problems involving X-rays, ultrasonics, optics, thermal sources etc; determination of thermal, stress/strain, electromagnetic, fluid flow etc. boundary conditions on inaccessible boundaries; determination of initial chemical composition etc.).
• Forces and sources: determination of the unknown external forces or inputs acting on a domain (structural dynamic modification and reconstruction) and internal concentrated and distributed sources/sinks (sources of heat, noise, electromagnetic radiation etc.).
• Governing equations: inference of analytic forms of partial and/or integral equations governing the variation of measured field quantities.

Inverse Problems in Science and Engineering is a unique source of information in this new field that will offer researchers the opportunity to publish their ideas in a single journal. Papers should provide non-trivial examples of practical applications. Multidisciplinary applied papers are particularly welcome.

International Multidisciplinary Journal to Promote Optimization Theory & Applications in Engineering Sciences. ...Aiming to close the gap between optimization theory and the practice of engineering...

Optimization and Engineering is a multidisciplinary journal. Its primary goal is to promote the application of optimization methods in the general area of engineering sciences. This includes facilitating the development of advanced optimization methods sciences for direct or indirect use in engineering sciences. The journal provides a forum in which engineering scientists obtain information about recent advances of optimization sciences, and researchers in mathematical optimization learn about the needs of engineering sciences and successful applications of optimization methods. Its aim is to close the gap between optimization theory and the practice of engineering.

All optimization methods of relevance to applications in engineering sciences will be considered:

• deterministic and stochastic,
• continuous,
• mixed integer and discrete,

when they are relevant to applications in engineering sciences. The journal also strives to publish successful applications of optimization in various engineering areas.

Optimization Methods and Software publishes refereed papers on the latest developments in the theory and realization of optimization methods, with particular emphasis on the interface between software development and algorithm design.

Topics include:

• Theory, implementation and performance evaluation of algorithms and computer codes for linear, nonlinear, discrete, stochastic optimization and optimal control. This includes in particular conic, semi-definite, mixed integer, network, non-smooth, multi-objective and global optimization by deterministic or nondeterministic algorithms.
• Algorithms and software for complementarity, variational inequalities and equilibrium problems, and also for solving inverse problems, systems of nonlinear equations and the numerical study of parameter dependent operators.
• Various aspects of efficient and user-friendly implementations: e.g. automatic differentiation, massively parallel optimization, distributed computing, on-line algorithms, error sensitivity and validity analysis, problem scaling, stopping criteria and symbolic numeric interfaces.
• Theoretical studies with a clear potential for applicability, as well as successful applications of optimization methods and software in specific areas such as engineering, machine learning, data mining, economics, finance, biology, or medicine.

Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization

The aim of this international journal is to provide a vehicle for disseminating information about all aspects of structural and multidisciplinary optimization through a single medium. It covers a wide range of topics related to

• optimally designing structures (stressed systems) and
• multidisciplinary optimization techniques if one discipline involved deals with structures (stressed solids) or fluids.

The scope of the journal ranges from mathematical foundations of this field through algorithm and software development with benchmark studies to practical applications and case studies in structural, aero-space, mechanical, civil, chemical and naval engineering. Closely related fields, such as computer-aided design and manufacturing, reliability analysis, artificial intelligence, system identification and modelling, inverse processes, computer simulation as well as active control of structures are also covered by the journal, if the treated topic is linked with or is relevant to optimization.

Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization publishes original research papers, review articles, industrial applicatons, brief notes, educational articles, book reviews, conference diary, forum section, discussions on papers, authors replies, obituaries, announcements and society news. It is the official journal of the International Society of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization.
